Chimney Caps & DampersChimney caps & dampers in Yorkville, IL
The cap on top and the damper down low are your chimney’s two gatekeepers — one keeps the weather and wildlife out, the other keeps your heated air in. Get them right and you save money, prevent damage, and sleep through the night without a raccoon in the flue.
A chimney is, by design, a hole in your roof. The cap and damper are what stop that hole from becoming a problem. A missing or rusted cap lets rain pour straight down the flue, invites birds and squirrels to nest, and lets embers drift onto the roof. A worn damper leaves a chimney-sized gap for your furnace-heated air to escape all winter. Both are small parts with an outsized effect on comfort, safety, and your heating bill.
Chimney caps
A good stainless steel cap does three jobs at once: a solid top sheds rain away from the flue, a mesh screen keeps out birds, squirrels, and raccoons, and the design acts as a spark arrestor to stop embers from reaching your roof. We fit caps sized to your flue — single-flue caps for a standard chimney, multi-flue or full-coverage caps where several flues or a large crown need protecting. Stainless resists the rust that eats cheap galvanized caps within a few Illinois winters.
Dampers
The traditional throat damper sits just above the firebox. When it warps, rusts, or won’t seal, warm air leaks out around the clock. A better option for many homes is a top-sealing damper — it mounts at the top of the flue with a rubber gasket that closes airtight, doubles as a rain cap, and is operated by a cable from the firebox. When you’re not burning, it seals the chimney like a closed window instead of a cracked one.
What a failing cap or damper looks like
- Water dripping or staining inside the firebox after rain
- Scratching, chirping, or scrabbling sounds from the chimney
- Leaves, twigs, or nesting material falling into the fireplace
- A cold draft pouring down even with the damper “closed”
- A rusted, bent, or missing cap visible from the yard
Keeping water out with a proper cap is the first line of defense against the masonry damage we handle under chimney repair. If animals have already moved in, we clear them out and screen the opening during a sweep. Starting prices for caps and dampers are on the pricing page.
Caps & dampers questions
Do I really need a chimney cap?
Yes. A cap keeps rain, animals, and debris out of the flue and acts as a spark arrestor. A chimney without one takes on water with every storm and is an open invitation to nesting wildlife — two of the most common problems we’re called for.
What’s the best material for a cap?
Stainless steel. It stands up to Illinois freeze-thaw and won’t rust out the way galvanized caps do. It costs a little more up front and lasts far longer, so it’s cheaper over the life of the chimney.
There’s an animal in my chimney — can you help?
We can clear the flue and install a screened cap so it doesn’t happen again. If there’s a nest with young animals, we’ll advise on timing — and once they’re out, a cap keeps the next one from moving in.
What is a top-sealing damper?
It’s a damper that mounts at the top of the flue with an airtight rubber gasket, operated by a cable from the firebox. It seals far better than a throat damper and doubles as a rain cap, so you lose less heated air all winter.
Why does cold air come down even with the damper shut?
Throat dampers warp and rust over the years and stop sealing. The metal-on-metal fit was never airtight to begin with. A top-sealing damper with a gasket solves the draft for good.
Can a new damper really lower my heating bill?
An open or leaky damper lets heated air escape up the chimney 24/7 during the season. Sealing that gap keeps conditioned air in the house. It won’t heat your home, but it stops a steady, invisible leak.
How long does it take to install a cap or damper?
A standard cap or top-sealing damper is usually a same-visit job once we’ve measured the flue. We carry common sizes and fit the right one on the spot wherever possible.
Will a cap stop downdrafts and smoke smell?
A cap helps with rain-driven odor and some downdrafts, but a persistent smoke smell can also point to creosote or a flue-sizing issue. We’ll look at the whole picture rather than just selling you a cap.
