Common questions
Chimney questions, answered honestly
How often should I have my chimney swept?
For a wood-burning fireplace used through a typical Illinois winter, once a year is the right rhythm — usually in late summer or early fall before you light your first fire. The real trigger is buildup: the NFPA 211 standard calls for cleaning once creosote reaches about an eighth of an inch. If you burn often or burn unseasoned wood, you may need it more than once a season.
Will the sweep make a mess inside my house?
No. We lay down drop cloths, seal the fireplace opening, and run a HEPA vacuum the whole time we work. When we’re done, the only sign we were there is a cleaner chimney — we leave your hearth and floors the way we found them.
What’s the difference between a sweep and an inspection?
A sweep removes soot and creosote from the flue. An inspection checks the condition and safety of the whole system — the liner, masonry, cap, crown, and connections. We almost always do a Level 1 inspection as part of a sweep, so you get both a clean chimney and a clear picture of its health in one visit.
Do you sweep chimneys that haven’t been used in years?
Yes, and those are the ones worth looking at closely. A chimney that’s sat unused can hide nesting animals, blockages, cracked tiles, or water damage. We’ll inspect it first and tell you honestly whether it’s safe to use before you light a fire.
Do you service gas fireplaces too?
We do. Gas units still need annual attention — cleaning the burner and glass, checking the venting, and testing safety components. We also handle gas valve replacement when a valve is worn or no longer sealing properly.
Are you really available seven days a week?
Yes. We answer and schedule seven days a week, from 7:00 AM to 9:30 PM, including evenings and weekends. If you smell smoke in the house or think you’ve had a chimney fire, call us right away — that’s an emergency and shouldn’t wait.
Are you bonded and insured?
We are fully bonded and insured. That protects your home and your family on every job, and it’s a basic thing any chimney company working on your roof and in your home should carry.
