Chimney Sweep in Plainfield, ILChimney Sweep, Inspection & Repair in Plainfield, IL
Plainfield is both Will County’s oldest community and one of its fastest-grown, so its chimneys run the full range — from historic brick near the DuPage River to prefab flues in subdivisions barely twenty years old. United Chimney Sweepers works across all of it, seven days a week.
An old town that grew into a boomtown
Plainfield traces to James Walker’s 1820s sawmill at Walkers’ Grove on the DuPage River, was platted in 1834, and later sat at the crossroads of the Lincoln Highway and Route 66. Its downtown historic district is on the National Register, and the homes there carry true 19th-century masonry chimneys. But Plainfield also exploded with subdivisions in recent decades, so most of the town is newer construction with prefab metal fireplaces and gas units. That split means we tailor the work to the home: historic brick near Settlers’ Park gets masonry repair, while a newer house gets prefab-system service.
The right service for your home’s era
A thorough chimney inspection is how we tell which is which and what each needs. On older Plainfield chimneys we watch the crown, joints, and liner for water damage; on newer prefab systems we look at chase covers, gaskets, and creosote. Either way you get an honest account — we work to the NFPA 211 standard and do not invent repairs. A yearly chimney sweep clears creosote from any wood-burning flue, old or new.
Water, wildlife, and the DuPage River
With the DuPage River and the Lake Renwick heron rookery nearby, Plainfield chimneys see damp air and plenty of birds. A sound cap keeps rain and wildlife out, and breathable waterproofing protects porous older masonry from the freeze-thaw damage that moisture drives. United Chimney Sweepers is family-owned by Michael and Mark Lloyd, bonded and insured, and voted Best Company in Illinois in 2021.

Plainfield chimney questions
My Plainfield home is in a new subdivision. Is its chimney low-maintenance?
Lower than a century-old masonry stack, but not maintenance-free. Plainfield’s newer homes usually have factory-built metal fireplaces or gas units. Wood-burning prefab systems collect creosote and need a yearly sweep; their chase covers, gaskets, and caps also wear and can let water in. Gas units need their venting and components checked. A yearly inspection on a modern system is quick and inexpensive, and it catches the issues specific to that type before they matter.
I own one of the historic downtown homes. What’s different about its chimney?
The chimneys on homes in Plainfield’s National Register historic district are 19th-century masonry, and they need repairs suited to old brick — matched mortar, careful repointing, proper crown work. A modern hard mortar can actually damage soft historic brick. The flue liner may also need evaluating on a chimney that old. We approach these with the care they deserve, keeping the repair both sound and in keeping with the home’s appearance.
Does the DuPage River affect chimneys in Plainfield?
Homes near the river sit in more humid air, and moisture is the main driver of long-term chimney deterioration — it speeds freeze-thaw cracking and rusts metal components. The nearby Lake Renwick rookery also means more birds looking for a flue to nest in. The practical defenses are a sound crown, a well-fitted cap, and breathable waterproofing on porous brick. We assess your chimney’s specific exposure and recommend only what it needs.
